The ANC Brief: Senatorial debates round 1

ABS-CBN held the first round of senatorial debates. Here are the stories making the headlines on ANC today:

Face off

ABS-CBN held the first round of senatorial debates with some interesting statements from the candidates. Some of them called for a review of tax reforms as they blame inflation on higher levies on fuel. Florin Hilbay said former President Benigno Aquino III should not be blamed for Mamasapano. Francis Tolentino said the mess in the MRT should be blamed on the transport officials of the last administration. Larry Gadon defended the Marcoses and Martial Law. Then there are other political stories outside of the debate. Sara Duterte said she is not running for president. This after Palace Spokesperson Sal Panelo said she could win the next presidential elections.

On a high

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is on a high after a recent Social Weather Stations poll showed Filipinos see fewer drug users. PNP spokesperson Sr. Supt. Bernard Banac said this means their drug war is effective. Sen. Antonio Trillanes has a different take. He said there are fewer drug users because thousands are killed “without due process.”

Flooding the market

Will the tariffication bill be good for the economy? Economists think it will solve any shortage of rice, bring the price of the staple down and stabilize inflation. Farmers and traders think they won’t be able to compete if the market is flooded. Raul Montemayor of the Federation of Free Farmers will be on “Early Edition.”

Blue chips slide

The Philippine Stock Exchange posted its second weekly loss last week with blue chips sliding and foreign funds leaving the country. Developments in the US-China trade talks are expected to impact the market. Will the market bounce back and correct?

Pressing his attack

In an interview with DZMM over the weekend, Rappler CEO Maria Ressa said there is nothing regular with the six times she had to post bail in two months. Presidential Spokesperson Sal Panelo will be on “Headstart.” He is sure to press his attack on Ressa and Rappler.
