‘Don’t run ‘Day’: Why Duterte doesn’t want daughter Sara to run for President

MANILA – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has not yet made clear her intent to be her father’s successor.

But being at the forefront of the midterm polls that saw 9 of her party’s candidates win the Senate race, she is believed to be flirting a possible presidential bid in 2022.

However, her father President Rodrigo Duterte has repeatedly offered a word of caution if she plans to seek a higher office.

“Mao na si Inday, ‘di nako padaganun,” he said in a speech Wednesday in Cagayan De Oro, where he administered the oath of office of the city’s newly elected officials.

(That’s why I would not allow Inday to run.)

“Ingnon gyud nako, ‘Ayaw gyud ‘Day.’ Baboyon ka lang aning present crop of politicians, mga kawatan,” he added.

(I would tell her, ‘Don’t run ‘Day.’ These present crop of politicians would destroy you. They are thieves.)

In the midterm polls, Davao City gave Sara a landslide win in her reelection bid as mayor, securing 580,440 votes against the 4,270 of her rival, Jun Marcellones.
